Jem - It's Amazing

This song has pulled me through the toughest times... When I had hit my lowest point, I unknowingly habitually listened to this song the moment I woke up and the moment before I turned out the lights to head to bed.. Truly inspirational. Reminded me that at times, fighting a tiring battle to break through the challenges isn't enough when rejection is met. Challenges that sink you to the bottom of the pit leading to the worst: self-doubt. Never doubt yourself: your abilities and self-worth. If you let the world rob you of these qualities, nothing is your own.

Patience. Determination. The door will open to you with all you deserve.. and "nothing will compare to deserving your dream"

Girl of the Month: Alexis Bledel

---Smart & Savvy, Inside & Out---

Not only did she attend NYU and become the face of the smart-witty-speed talking Rory from Gilmore Girls, she has her head in the right place both with her books and her personal style.

Alexis knows how to compliment her pale skin and icy blue eyes with the appropriate color tones. But why does she deserve to be the "Girl of the Month"?

Never one to limit herself to the whimsical and romantic category she so comfortably always dressed accordingly to, she spices up her look with: tactfully-selected edgy pieces and eye-popping colors. Yet, few can attain the look she achieves, adding an edgy, daring touch while maintaining her youthful, girly touch.

The Secret to the Perfect Ankle Boots for the Short & Tall

I'm super excited about this post! I've been approached by a multiple number of girlfriends regarding this style dilemma so often that I lost count...

"I cannot wear ankle booties for the life of me. I'm too short."

 Images: JustJared
If Rachel Bilson (5'2") to Sienna Miller (5'6) can rock em', you sure as hell can!

Buckle-up, because your prayers will be answered... and it all begins with the strategic trick-of-the-eye.

Oh, you can count the numerous times in numerous posts where I emphasize that styling an outfit isn't always about what you wear, it's about how you wear it. We all have more important things in life to give our noggins a workout over, the last thing we need is to fret about what to wear and whether we can pull a look off or not. Style isn't about brainpower, it's not about the superficial. Rather, it's an artsy composition. Once we get the tips-and-tricks down, everything will happen organically. And that is what sets a bold, confident, fashion maven apart from the brown-nosing copycats of the world <3

First off, before we begin. Pay mind to the toe-shape of the booties. The most flattering are the round yet slightly pointed toe (keyword: slightly pointed). The round toe is much more complimentary to the perfect pair of booties. And to avoid the witch-hunt and false mistaken identity for a witch stuck in a time warp from the Salem Witch Trials, steer clear of the pointed toe booties (exception: if the booties have an urban feel, with lace-up details, a la J.Lo from her Jenny on the Block vid... then you're safe and excused)

Exhibit A: Fool Proof Cut-off Point: 3 Inches Above the Deepest Arch of the Ankle

Yes, when your mother told you to throw the tape measure away or measuring cup out the window and simply told you to "eye-ball" measure the length of your hem or the amount of flour for your cake mix, she wasn't joking. Ankle booties require just as much of a tactful, eye-ball skill as getting the perfect texture to that cake batter.

1. The most flattering cut-off for your booties would be approximately 3 in. above the deepest arch of your ankle. This is the determining factor for flattering fancy feet.
2. Avoid ankle boots that mold tightly to your leg. You want the top-rim of your ankle boots to give a little room (not just for your better mobility, but for a better, flattering line of sight). Ankle boots that rise straight up rather than clinging to your ankles would heighten your look without making you appear shorter. Regardless of your natural height, this is a must follow tidbit!

Case in Point:
 Alexandra Neel Suede Lace-Up Booties

Ankle booties done right. Eye-ball this fab pair of footwork and you see the 2 rules apply: the ankle cut-off lies about 3 in. above the deepest arch of the ankle and the width of the ankle cut-off is roomy enough to not suffocate the look. If only it had a higher hidden platform.. (this we will continue on in Exhibit B)

Pour La Victoire Panthea Bootie in Black

Platorm, peep-toed, and adorned with excessive embellishment. Pour La Victoire never fails to impress in infusing an extra kick to the basic black bootie. Even better, the medium-width cuff above the ankle is thin enough to accentuate the ankle line without overwhelming the heaviness of the fancy footwear. Strategically smart...

Exhibit B: Leg Lengthening Open-Faced Booties

If you're on the brink between seasons, a great way to let in some air without lugging along the Fall/Winter season vibe would be to don' the "open-faced booties". Laced-up, buckled, or with cut-outs... you name it, the shoe universe has got it.

The Lowdown: Looks to Kill and Something to Show For
Believe it or not, the open-faced booties don't just look nice, their looks serve an actual purpose! Sure the hidden platform booties can add height to your stature, but with the open-faced booties, the front panel allows your skin to peek through the masses of the bootie, further lengthening those stems of yours without cutting the vertical length of your legs (yes, we are manipulating the naked eye)! Deception is not always a sin, in the fashion world, it's a form of artful manipulation; learning to accentuate and flatter what you do have, rather than focus on what you don't have. This is what sets a confident, bold fashionista apart from the rest. She knows what her flaws are, yet she confidently focuses on her positive sides to find a way to better project it to the world through self-expression and body conscious wear.

Critical Closing Statement: A hidden platform + 3 in. above the deepest arch of your ankle + (optional) open-faced booties = ankle master in 3 small commandments at the tip of your brain. Through my experience styling shoots, examining celebrity do's-and-don'ts, and having my fill of tried-and-true moments of trying on a good share of booties, I've concocted these brilliant strategies to finding the perfect, flattering pair of booties regardless of your height.

Now, I have done my homework and shared my cheat notes. It's time for you to stop shying away from those fashion-forward ankle booties and face the music! Time to do your homework...

Bye, Bye Frumpy.

"Today is a bleh day." "I feel so bleh."
Beware, this mindset is contagious. It starts with one gal pal and next thing you know, we're playing round-robin of catching this drab mindset...

Let your hair down, it's time to cut those heels a break for some R&R... We all face those days where we have absolutely no idea what to wear for the day. Suddenly, we find ourselves standing in front of our closet staring... staring... and waiting for the emergence of an epiphany that seems to have taken a day-off. Unfortunately, without the pre-notice. This is not to say it's a day to suffocate ourselves in a head-to-toe sweater-and-sweats disaster. No, please do not self-sacrifice yourself as the reincarnation of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky... it won't do the world any good, promise!

Going casual for the day does not mean you have to frump it up and hide away from the public. So, this post is for all the ladies in sweats... there are no excuses for that static-wear monstrosity. Clean-up your drag days and trade in your contagiously bleh aura  for a comfy, casual, and chic vibe!

Olivia Palermo in New York

Okay, I know what you're thinking. Olivia? In sneakers? Believe it or not, this widely-adored style icon of a socialite has marched the city pavement in flat shoes (not just flats) on more than one occasion. I love seeing her in heels, but seeing her in sneakers (even if those sneakers are Lanvin -- of course) brings her down-to-earth again.

Rather than dressing within one color-tone palette, mix it up and dabble into a range of colors so long as there is a form of continuity between the colors. This freshens up the casual look rather than drowning into all black and grays... eventually blending into the gloomy weather like the wallflower you aren't!

Tidbit: French Sole NY flats
Olivia's wearing French Sole's Passport leather quilted flats in beige/black, $225. For comfortable, durable flats to wear walking up and down the city, day-to-night, French Sole is Olivia's go-to spot! I bought this exact pair of flats and have been wearing it obsessively for a year and a half. FS's flats are fashionably convenient. After slipping on my first pair of French Sole flats, I'm hooked...

Buy it! http://frenchsoleshoes.com/category.php?id=4

The Story Behind French Sole:
"A paradise for ballet flat lovers, the store offers so much more. Soft Italian calfskin ballets, Spanish kidskin patterns and hand-beaded ballerinas are in abundance here as well.

Our specialized concept fuses true fashion with cozy comfort, with an emphasis on proper fitting. It will be easy to snare your favorite styles with sizes ranging from size 4 - 12, many available in narrow and wide widths on special order. Serving such well-shod luminaries as Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, Barbara Walters, Ali MacGraw, Cindy Crawford, Candace Bergen, and The Duchess of York, the cozy setting of this shop assures the intimate attention and commitment we believe will satisfy each guest."

Whitney Port in L.A.
Whit lives a bi-coastal lifestyle. Jetting back to her hometown in sunny Cali whenever she gets the chance (so far, she's spotted in L.A. practically every other week). Juggling two different types of weather, two different fashion frontier vibes, and two different types of city attitudes... Whitney definitely has become a pro at bringing the two fashion flavors of both coasts together to form her own aesthetic. Her lovely XL striped sweater paired with oxfords is a simple, easy way to pay tribute to the preppy London appeal that's been taking over the east coast. Every girl should own at least one striped closet piece!

Tidbit: When wearing over-sized sweaters

1. Never wear anything else that's over-sized below. No sweats! No flares! No wide-leg! Anything that has extra-material would only shorten and widen your frame. Always pair those comfy sweaters with either: a) leggings / jeggings OR b) skinny jeans OR c) skinny cigarette trousers. Notice the keyword here: Tight and Skinny.

2. Hair: Hair should either but pulled away from the face in a high ponytail / bun. Or, if you want to let your hair down, loose waves will do the trick. No prom-queen, overdone curls please! Believe it or not, it can add some extra pounds to your upper portion while swallowing your neckline, making your upper shoulder area seem even bulkier.

Ashley Tisdale in Toronto
Ashley always walks out of her house like the ultimate Cali-girl. Tanned and in shorts and a tank the majority of the time. She mixes in a few bohemian pieces with some L.A. grunge here and there. This is exactly how most L.A. Cali-girls dress. Relaxed, yet still stylish. And of course, and overdose of accessories is a must! I love how she breaks apart the color spectrum of her outfit.. with destroyed Siwy Camilla Shorts in a bleach-dyed wash, a mustard yellow Balenciaga First Bag, and brown Dolce Vita Aries Bootie Sandals... Ever so youthful, ever so hip..

A few editorial spreads worthy of noting...

Jessica Alba
in Genlux Magazine, Summer 2010 - wearing Chanel clogs

How AMAZING is this shoot? A mix of high-fashion a la "Welcome to the Dollhouse" creepiness.. the steel cabin vibe is a great contrast to her mauve rose-colored structured number. The knee-high stockings paired with the studded Chanel clogs adds a dash of funk to the prim, proper vibe given off by the combination of her extravagant diamond chandelier earrings, princess bouffant do', and lady-like frock.

It's one thing to see Alba in hot bikini shoots (okay, girls drool over those photo spreads just as much as the guys around the globe do), but I love seeing Alba flip the switch into high-fashion shoots. Over the years, she's left behind her play-it-safe-in-black roots, and reinvented her image by stepping into the bold, daring, high-fashion spotlight...

Leighton Meester
in Cosmopolitan Spain in a Christian Dior Corset

Of course, widely loved, Serena (Blake Lively) is known for being the down-to-earth, buxom-blond face of Gossip Girl (every girl's secret vice). But where would the show be without the over-dramatic, Queen of the Upper East Side, secretly insecure-sensitive, boldly-say-or-do-what-I-please brunette, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester)? You and I both know, Blair Waldorf defines Gossip Girl...

Although Blair is a far-fetch from Leighton's true personality, who better to rock daring designer pieces than Leighton? Alter-ego aside, never to shy away from bold and daring designer duds, Leighton has surely earned her spot as a fashion icon..
